Power BI Desktop

Artificial intelligence euphoria has taken Businesses and Markets by storm. Enterprises are using AI to transform their businesses, processes, and resources by leveraging AI tools and technologies.

One application that most organizations use for Data, Analysis, and Business Intelligence is Microsoft Power BI. Fortunately, Power BI offers unique Artificial Intelligence capabilities in both functional and visual forms.

Power BI comes with several software services, apps, and connectors, which collaborate to offer amazing dashboarding capabilities and highly interactive visualization.

Power BI enables users to fetch data from almost any source, transform it, visualize it, and slice and dice it as per the business requirement. Users can share the Power BI reports online or via Power BI Mobile apps.

In this blog, we will give you an overview of AI features and capabilities available within Power BI. We will provide a higher-level explanation of some interesting AI features, and their use cases, and then cover AI-enabled reports.

What are Power BI Work Roles?

Power BI work roles are broadly divided into 3 parts and each consists of some insights or AI features:

What Are Power BI Work Roles

1- Data Visualization

Q&A Visual, Key Influencers, Decomposition Tree, and Smart Narrative.

2- Data Preparation

Text Analytics, Vision, AI Insights Section, Azure Machine Learning.

Key Artificial Intelligence Features of Power BI

Here are some of the key AI features of Power BI:

Key Artificial Intelligence Features of Power BI

1. AI Builder

It’s the latest no-code capability that comes with the Power BI platform, which enables users to automate processes and workflows and also allows them to predict possible outcomes. With AI Builder, one can incorporate intelligence into their applications with no data science or coding prerequisites.

It is a helpful feature that performs activities such as object detection, form processing, and binary and text classification.

2. Azure Cognitive Services

These services are pre-trained ML (Machine Learning) models that can fetch deep insights from vast datasets from various resources. These services are integrated into Power BI directly, which allows users to extract the required information from a wide range of sources such as images, documents, and social media content effectively.

The embedded ML algorithms can parse the documents to recognize information such as the names of people, organizations, and their locations, which can be used to make informed decisions.

Key Azure cognitive services available in PowerBI are:

  • Sentiment Analysis: It uses text processing, text analytics, word placement, part-of-speech analysis, and various other NLP technologies to help you analyze and score sentiments. You can use this feature to measure the user sentiment towards your organization via social media, discussion forums, and customer reviews websites. Once you provide input, this service uses ML algorithms to generate a sentiment score between 0 and 1, where 0 is the maximum negative sentiment and 1 is the maximum positive sentiment. It supports English, Spanish, French, and German languages.
  • Key Phrase Extraction: This allows users to feed large sets of unstructured text in Power BI and fetch the list of key phrases. Unlike sentiment analysis, this feature can deliver better outcomes if provided with text in large blocks.
  • Language Detection: This service evaluates the input text and offers an ISO identifier along with the name of the language. It could be used to analyze the data columns where text language is not known. Currently, it supports more than 120 languages.
  • Image Tagging: Image Tagging service supports tagging of 2000+ identifiable objects, actions, environmental variables, and living species. Tagging does not practice any inherited hierarchies or taxonomy. It goes beyond the primary object in the image and also covers the neighboring objects.

These services are bundled with Power BI Premium and one doesn’t need to subscribe to Azure Cognitive services separately to avail of them.

3. Key Influencers Visual

It is the first AI-powered data visualization bundled with Power BI. It analyzes the data, prioritizes the parameters that matter, and showcases them as key influencers. It helps the end user to identify and analyze the factors that can influence the metric that is being assessed.

With this feature, users can leverage the capabilities of AI to gather deep insights from data as it forges multiple visuals into one.

Key Influencers Visual

Here are some key features offered by the Key Influencer dashboard.

  • Tabs: The influencer visuals window usually comes with two tabs. The tab ‘Top segments’ displays the segments that contribute to the given metric value the most, whereas the tab ‘Key Influencers’ displays the contributors to the chosen metric value. Here each segment is permitted to have several values.
  • Drop-down box: It displays the metric that is being looked into by the user or data analyst.
  • Restatement: It is divided into two parts, the right pane and the left pane. It helps the users to understand and analyze what indication is given by the visual.
  • Left pane: It displays the list of top influencers.
  • Right pane: It shows the graphical representation of the data.
  • Average: Here the average is calculated for all values for the ‘Theme’ barring the influencer that is being selected.
  • Checkbox: It is indeed a filtering feature that shows the values of the selected influencers.

4. Develop your ML Models With Azure Machine Learning

Power BI offers an AutoML function, which allows business analysts and consultants to build custom machine-learning models without any sort of coding.

Business Intelligence leverages the automated ML features and capabilities embedded in Azure Machine Learning to determine which model could be accessed by the user, and what sort of permission they have, and then it makes these models available for the users in an intuitive point.

Develop your ML Models With Azure Machine Learning

This feature enables users and data analysts to collaborate with the Data Scientist with ease. It is equipped with the guardrails feature, that improves the process visibility and the quality of Machine Learning models, and enables users to develop their own ML models.

AutoML also enables the users to develop supervised ML techniques such as Classification, Binary Prediction, and Regression Models for dataflows.

Once your ML model is trained with the datasets, it automatically generates a Power BI report displaying the prospective performance of your ML model.

5. Power BI Chatbots

Although Chatbot is not a default feature of Power BI, it could be integrated easily to streamline your business data access and consumption. Power BI chatbots allow users to fetch and analyze data from 3rdparty messaging apps such as Skype or Slack, by simply putting queries in natural language.

Power BI Chatbots

The chatbot, in turn, responds in the form of text or multimedia (images, pie charts, graphs, etc.).

It offers valuable insight to business owners and decision-makers. They can fetch business insights right from their messaging apps, which also eliminates the overhead of filtering the data manually or switching multiple dashboards.

6. Decomposition Tree

Data aggregation is among the biggest challenges while visualizing the data as per the dimensions. It is quite a cumbersome and time-consuming task to develop different visuals for large datasets.

Decomposition Tree

The Decomposition Tree makes it easier for the users. It is a pre-built AI capability, which automatically groups the data, drill down, and view different dimension in the report.

For example, if users want to check the sales data, then they can add dimensions like country, city, and product to their dashboard with simple clicks. They can use AI splits to simply increase or decrease (high and low values) these dimensions.

7. Q&A Visuals

How will you feel if your questions in plain language get answered by the Power BI dashboards? This feature allows users to ask data-specific questions in natural language and then produces the responses from your reports. This AI feature lets users define similar terms to prevent challenges associated with similar words.

Q&A Visuals

For example, if you want to look at the sales of your products, then it will let you add dimensions like country, region, gender, product type, and many more to deliver the best results. The users can ask questions about the Sales, and it will pin the visual based on the parameters specified by them.

Limitations of AI in Power BI

AI offers some unprecedented advantages, but it comes with its own set of limitations as well.

Here are some issues you may encounter while working with Power BI:

  • You may experience slight variation in visual output if using complex and large datasets.
  • Sometimes the changes in the Data don’t reflect in some visuals. This has been observed in the Smart Narrative.
  • AI-based visuals may encounter data security issues.
  • Q&A visual works well when your data is well-structured, prepared, and all fields are available in an accurate language. You may experience variation if fields are not fixed or in different languages.
